GOOD-centric Fairness for Animals

“The assumption that animals are without rights and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality.”

~ Arthur Schopenhauer, The Basis of Morality

Do animals have rights even though they do not bear responsibilities? Are rights conferred only to those who also hold duties? To those who can reason? What about infants or people with disabilities? Are rights granted only to human beings? If so, why? Is it because human beings are doing the granting? Human beings use animals for their unique gifts of strength, smell, etc. ~ do we owe them nothing in return? Should we not allow animals to reap the benefit of our gifts of love, goodness, and fairness? Do we only care about our own species? How loving is that?

To reach toward fairness in the treatment of animals, GOOD-centrics would support animal rights laws granted in proportion to each animal species' capacity to experience fear and pain. Further, GOOD-centrics would affirm that each animal should be allowed to live a life as natural as possible to the species if humans did not exist.
